I'm so happy that Valentine's Day just so happened to fall on a Saturday this year. For the past couple of years, I've wanted to make a fun little V-day breakfast for Kaylee and Kyle. With our hectic morning schedules, work, and school, it just never happened. In the Turner household, not one of us are morning people. We absolutely like LOVE our sleep to the very last second! Clearly a big fun morning breakfast would never work during the week for us.
Saturday morning, I woke up around 7:30am to start decorating the dining room and finish cooking before K and Kaylee woke up. During my rush to get everything last minute the day before, along with having a case of pregnancy brain, I got everything ready only to realize I forgot to buy nutella! I had found these cute little pancake kabobs via Pinterest, and had decided to make those instead of the heart shaped pancakes. My child loves nutella on any and everything, especially strawberries, so it was the perfect combination! My grandparents just so happen to live next door, literally, so across the street I ran in hopes of them having a jar of my missing ingredient. Thank goodness my Nana keeps it in stock for when Kaylee stops by to visit!
As I make it back home and walk inside, I hear K in the living room talking to the dog. Great. He's up early, and breakfast was still underway. Of course, Kaylee wasn't far behind him, and out of bed about 10 minutes after him. I made her cover her eyes before walking in and seeing the whole setup. She was shocked, and kept saying "Oh my gosh, this is so beautiful!" Haha! She's so dramatic, and I love it. The two early risers sat at the table and waited for the food to finish. Kaylee got to open her little Valentine's Day basket while they waited, and K opened his card and little gift I made.
All in all, it was a success, and the pancake kabobs were a total success! They were soo good. Will definitely be making some in the near future. Our little V-day breakfast consisted of cinnamon rolls, sliced strawberries, pancake kabobs, bacon, grits, and heart shaped cookies and mini cupcakes for dessert with a mason jar of strawberry milk to wash it all down with. It was delish. Without a doubt, I would absolutely make this a new Valentine's tradition... if only it fell on Saturday every year!
I had printed out some photo booth props, with the idea of using the decorated wall behind the table for a little "photo booth" fun. With the chaotic last minute shopping and running around, I came home and crashed about 9:00pm and forgot to cutout the props. So, those didn't get used as I had planned, but I'm sure I can find other uses for them though.
Here are a couple of pictures I snapped with my iPhone. I don't know why I didn't pull out my camera for these photos. I'm kicking myself for not doing so.
{Proof she isn't a morning person. ha!}
This year, I decided to make K's card instead of going out to fight the crowds in search of one. I almost always make his cards or gifts for any holiday. To me, when putting thought in to and creating something, it's more meaningful. I love receiving personalized gifts, so I try making things for others to love as well. This is the card I made for K this year. I didn't snap a picture of the back, but it said "Made with Love from Your Nerd".
My Dad called and said he would watch Kaylee so that K and I could go out and celebrate. I'm 8 months pregnant with no energy, and would have been perfectly content staying in and watching a movie. K wanted to go out to dinner at my favorite restaurant in town, so I obliged. We didn't have lunch just so we could have an appetizer, dinner, and dessert without feeling so full to the point of being sick. We pull into the parking garage and walk upstairs to Harry's at 4:45pm, only to be told there is already a 2 hour wait!! Since this pregnant girl hadn't eaten lunch, there was no way I could have waited 2 hours. Talk about a total letdown! This Momma was none too happy, and had been craving some Cajun cooking the entire day! K and I decided on an early dinner to beat the crowd. A lot of good that was. So, we decided on Olive Garden, and only had a 45 minute wait... that was bearable. The food and service was good and quick for as packed as it was. After dinner, we decided to join in with everyone else and go watch Fifty Shades of Grey. It was just alright. I went in knowing it was pretty much going to be a bust. Our first V-day as husband and wife was exciting and relaxing; breakfast with our munchkin, dinner and a movie, a quick stop by Wendy's to get a Frosty for the ride home, and in bed by 11:00pm. It was a wonderful day spent with my little family.
How was your Valentine's Day spent with loved ones?
